Hearing the silence

Just a quickie today. The girls are back at school, the house is quiet save for the sound of the persistent rain against the windows. I've spent two days now tidying and cleaning away all signs of the holidays. Now and again I stop and listen, but no giggles, no singing, no squabbling. No little sister up at the crack of dawn, no big sister lying languidly in bed at midday, no lazy days doing as we please - a week at the beach, an awfully big camping adventure, trips to visit friends in new places. No listening as the fridge and kitchen cupboard doors are opened in constant search of carbohydrates and no more getting dressed as and when we feel like it.

It may not have been the sunniest of summers but thank you girls for giving us so many warm memories - girly tea parties, endless "mum dancing", book and cuddle sharing, junping into cold, cold seas on warm, warm days, late nights watching favourite films, late nights listening to the animals chewing at our tent and late nights walking across the fields gazing at the stars. Thank you.

I will be back next week when the silence isn't so loud. Have a good weekend, enjoy it.

If you could only send some of your rain our way. It's been raining all around us but we seem to be in a deprived pocket -- very dry here! Beautiful post, as always!

What lovely words Kim and such delightful photographs, may I be rude and ask what camera you use, I have a good Sony digital and am now ready to upgrade, I take photographs of my friends children and frame them and give as presents, I would really love a Digital SLR and am going to write to Father christmas, oops is that allowed, I have a two year old at home, so not quite quiet enough

Dear M.... I have thought many a time over these last few weeks of tempestuous weather.. how magical and charmed your daughter's childhood is ..made so, by a very special, loving and nurturing mother..

P.s Is that some sort of cryptic message?

I have just had the gentle hum of the computer to listen to today. The sound of silence can be golden, overwhelming and downright eerie at times. I hope the house isn't too silent for you next week when you get back into the swing of things.

Just you wait till you have an empty nest.... that's not easy at all.But you do learn to cope and get a new routine for yourself.
Have a good weekend

Won't your girls have lots of lovely memories of their holidays when they're all grown up?
I remember lots of books being read, picnics in the park, tadpoling, filling the paddling pool (it would take hours!) and making dens out of my Dads stepladders and an old sheet.
Thank you for your kind words today Kim. Hope you all have a lovely weekend...stay dry!
Best wishes,
Deb x

I have just caught up on your flowers :). I love the first photo in this post it's beautiful. sounds as if today is, reflections of good times and wonderful holidays with the family. I like how you describe the silence. So different than what I think of as silence . I live alone with a cats, and dogs. So human voices are mostly lacking from day to day routine at home. I do love people and but still love going "home" it is safe and secure. If there were people there that would be fine. But home is home for me, and I love it. Your post made me think of home, and how all of us relate to how and where and with who, we live. Thanks for sending me on a mental reflection.

What an idyllic summer you describe!

Sounds like the perfect summer whatever the weather! I think we're all experts now in the quick putting on and removing of raincoats and setting forth no matter what the day brings!

You cannot imagine how much I too would love to be in a silent house waiting for my children coming home with all their tales. But alas, it's only the cats who get to appreciate the silence. I'm out there teaching... And only one of my children is still at home.

And we have the rain too.

Ah well.

Lovely post - I would welcome a little silence at the moment but you sound rather sad about yours - it sounds as though you had magical times during the holidays.

I have decided that we should go for walks together when the children are at school and find our perfect lavander field. What do you think? Look forward to that coffee, bring tissues!

Monday is my first day of silence as I've been working this week, so haven't been home alone yet. I always have mixed feelings about the start of term. I hope next week you find that 'silence is golden'. It sounds like you had a lovely summer.

Hi Kim,
I love lazy school holidays, I know what you mean about how quite it is when the children are at school, but at least I am able to keep my house clean for a couple of hours when they are at school.
Cheers Linda

What a lovely post...I had a very happy childhood full of lovely memories and feel it's so, so important to give my children the same special times to remember forever. That's what I love about blogging, all those happy memories are there for them to look back on, complete with our thoughts on how special they were to us and how fun our days spent together were...
